WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY
Cryotherapy, or Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC), is a process where the body is exposed to ultra-low temperatures ranging between -200°F and -256 °F. Clients enter a cryogenic chamber for a short duration of 1:30 to 3 minutes. This modality was first utilized in Japan in 1978. Athletes who are familiar with the use of ice packs or even ice baths following exercise have discovered WBC as a powerful and more comfortable modality to decrease recovery time and increase athletic performance. During my most recent trip to Los Angeles, I squeezed in a Cryotherapy Session at Cryohealthcare. I NEEDED to find out for myself what all the rave was about. Literally, every friend I have knew that I would love it and I finally got to try it out for myself.
I visited the swanky little office of Cryohealthcare on La Cienaga (next door to LA's best sandwich, Soda Pops).
Cryohealthcare was the first to bring the Cryo technology to the US and they are the leaders in the industry. All services are non-invasive and they cover health, fitness and beauty!
It's a pretty simple process. Once you're all signed in they take your blood pressure to make sure you don't have hypertension. This ensures your safety before you proceed.
Then, you get changed into a large robe, long white socks that hit above the knee, two pairs of gloves, earmuffs, a facemask, and a pair of slippers.
Since I knew I would be doing a post, I wanted to try out everything. I tested out two chambers (you're welcome). The first chamber I was fully enclosed. It was cold, but right about the time I wanted to run out, my session was up (2 minutes). The best thing about Cryohealthcare is that they want all of their clients to feel extremely comfortable SO they let you pick your freeze song. It's such a fun little detail. I could stand in there all day listening to Tiny Dancer. You can even freeze with a partner (so fun! But couldn't talk Kevin into it this time).
The process - you walk into a changing area of the chamber, hang your robe, push the door open and walk into the ice age. The entire time you're "freezing" you get a countdown update.
After my first service, I went into a warming chamber to prepare for my next freeze. It took a while to get the skin on my legs to warm to 80 degrees. I was pretty chilled.
Once I was warm enough, I went into the second chamber. In this chamber, your head has to be out because you're being chilled by nitrogen. For some reason, it felt colder even though it was the same temperature. I think it was because my head was so warm. You don't have to wear a mask and earmuffs for this one!
After my two full body freezes, I received an amazing Cryofacial. They have a tool that lets you use the Cryo technology to "spot-treat" ... THIS is awesome. I usually always wake up with a swollen face. I really wish I had this device at home.
So, I know what you're thinking! Why in the world would anyone want to do this? Well, there are a ton of benefits for you in the health, wellness, and beauty departments.

Freezing temperatures send the body into a "survival mode," which causes blood supply to flow to the most vital organs to relay more oxygen and nutrients. Once you leave the cold environment, the enriched and less-toxic blood is flushed back into the rest of the body. SOURCE
Walking out of the Cryo Chamber is sort of euphoric. You feel relieved, yes, but also invigorated and refreshed. Almost like you feel after a cool shower after two hours of hot yoga. It's an amazing feeling!!
The rest of the day I felt a little chilled but mostly normal. I'd been dealing with an injured back the week prior, and it definitely helped with that.
I've had a natural glow since my treatments. I'm hoping it stays! I can't wait to get back into the chamber.
